Londres- Después de los éxitos consecutivos de Mean Girls, The Notebook, Wedding Crashers y Red Eye, Hollywood estaba más que listo para declarar a Rachel McAdams “la nueva Julia Roberts”. Sin embargo la joven actriz canadiense rápido desafió las expectativas de los jefes de estudio aceptando roles secundarios (The Family Stone) y protagonizando proyectos independientes (The Lucky Ones, Married Life) que pasaron desapercibidos. “No tengo ningún plan. “ admitió McAdams durante su entrevista exclusiva con El Nuevo Día durante la rueda promocional de Sherlock Holmes, la superproducción de Warner Brothers que estrena esta semana. “Hay varios factores que me lleva a escoger un proyecto, pero el principal sigue siendo mi instinto.”
Después de un breve descanso el este año el instinto de McAdams la llevó a codearse en pantalla con Russell Crowe (State of Play), a tener un romance imposible con Eric Bana (The Time Traveler’s Wife) y a tratar de inventar el personaje más famoso de Conan Doyle junto a Robert Downey Jr y Jude Law. Durante una agradable charla para promover el nuevo filme de Guy Ritchie, la actriz admitió tener más afinidad por los momentos de acción de sus personaje que por su vestuario y se admitió ser una más del numeroso club que admira el talento de Robert Downey Jr.
Si te dejas llevar por la mayoría de sus filmes o por su reputación, un set de Guy Ritchie aparentaría ser un marasmo de testosterona. ¿Te preocupo en algún momento que tu personaje se hubiera diseñado para simplemente cumplir con la cuota femenina?
RM-(Sonríe) Pues en este proyecto no me tuve que preocupar por eso, porque el personaje no está escrito de esas forma. En el guión Irene tiene funciones bien dinámicas porque es un elemento esencial de las cosas que suceden en la trama a la misma vez que crea una relación bien particular con Sherlock Holmes. Fue bien chévere ser la que trae un poco de conflicto y caos a la vida de ese personaje. Y lo otro que te tengo que aclarar es que Guy (Ritchie, el director) tendrá la apariencia de un futbolista rudo pero definitivamente tiene el alma de un artista. El se encargó de que todos nos sintiéramos preparados para enfrentar los retos de este filme y logró que la filmación fuera relajada y divertida. Así que en ningún momento me sentí excluida.
El personaje de Irene no tiene la presencia icónica de Watson y Holmes. ¿Te dio eso más libertad como actriz?
RM- Si, para mi eso fue un alivio. Durante toda la producción los chicos tuvieron que lidiar con las especulaciones de lo que estaban haciendo con sus personajes. Irene solo sale en un cuento, y ese material inicial se presta para varias interpretaciones así que fue agradable poder encontrar la que funcionaba para esta nueva versión del universo de Doyle.
En la conferencia de prensa Ritchie comentó que piensa que Holmes y Watson representan cualidades universales del ser humano. ¿Con cual te identificas más? ¿Con el ímpetus impulsivo de Watson o con el análisis exhaustivo de Holmes?
RM- Pues yo definitivamente tiendo a pensar antes de actuar y de analizarlo todo. (Se ríe) Diría que hasta tiendo a sobre analizar las cosas.
¿Ha sido eso un obstáculo en tu carrera como actriz?
RM- Pues si porque actuar requiere que uno sea espontáneo y que uno este presente emocionalmente y no estar pensando en lo que estás haciendo. Pero para mi eso suele ser un poco más fácil una vez me siento que me he preparado para interpretar el papel.
Pues cuéntame, ¿cuál es tu análisis de la relación entre Irene y Sherlock?
RM- Es una variación bien intrigante del baile de la seducción entre una pareja, porque la mayoría del tiempo están compitiendo el uno cono el otro. Ella es la única mujer que le ha ganado y el puede hacer lo mismo con ella, así que esa es gran parte de la atracción. Como actriz es extremadamente gratificante interpretar una relación romántica donde la conclusión inevitable es matrimonio e hijos. Uno nunca sabe, pero no creo que ese sea el futuro de Irene con Holmes.
Lo interesante del rol es que no funciona como interés romántico tradicional. ¿Qué disfrutaste más, las secuencias de acción o el vestuario particular del personaje?
RM- Las peleas. (Se ríe) Definitivamente porque la ropa de esa época es tan elaborada que era toda una ciencia decidir cuando comer o si me lo podía quitar para ir al baño. Pero además de eso, a mi de joven siempre me gustaron los deportes y este tipo de cosa es lo único que me queda de esa etapa donde podía decir que era atleta.
Si hay algo que caracteriza el trabajo de Robert Downey Jr es su inteligencia como actor. ¿Hubo algún momento que te sentiste intimidada?
RM-Si en ocasiones, pero fue al principio y precisamente por estar pensando en el alcance increíble que el tiene como actor. Porque la experiencia de hacer escenas con el fue un verdadero placer. El tiene suficiente carisma y talento como para no tener que hacer nada y el es el que más se esfuerza y más pasión tiene por encontrar la forma de darle vida a la escena. Trabajar con el fue un encanto.
