For some reason I expected the box office opening of 2012 to be a little bit more spectacular than the 65 million it has been reported at the domestic box office. Maybe Sony feels the same way since the focus on the news has been on the INTERNATIONAL BOX OFFICE where the film ponied up a 160 million. The grand total is 225 million. Which means the movie will eventually break even. But I have to ponder this terrible thought: Will the opening of New Moon be stronger than this? I guess next week we will know how strong the Twilight phenomenon really is.
The rest of the top five was made up by A Christmas Carol grabbing 20 million more, giving it a better prognosis for the Holiday Season. The Men Who Stare at Goats ranked up another 6.9 millions in third place. The sure to be nominated for Best Picture Precious moved up to fourth with 6 million in tickets sales, a gigantic feat considering the movie is only playing in 157 theaters. Number five belongs to MJ whose documentary added another 5 million dollars to its tally.
For more detailed numbers you can take a look at this Box Office Chart
As far as the Box Office in Puerto Rico, Caribbean Cinemas has not updated their website top five since last week, so come back tomorrow to confirm that 2012 edged out Jim Carrey’s 3D pre-holiday spectacle. Lets hope Miente did better at Fine Arts Cafe. Have you seen it yet? Why not? How about Where the Wild Things Are?
Ok, the full list of the best films of 2009 won’t be ready for another month, but here is my favorite scene from one of my favorite movies to come out this year, The Brothers Bloom. Haven’t heard of it? RUN! Don’t walk to the video store.
I have to say one of the most impressive things about The Road is Viggo Mortensen’s raw and understated performance. It quietly gets under your skin. The other thing I have to say is that he is one of the coolest actors I’ve ever had the chance to interview (way back in The Return of the King Junket).
Take a look at his promotional interview for The Road and look at how he clutches to his copy of the novel. To some that might seem “weird and actory”. But having spoken with the actor, I’m pretty sure it’s just his way of showing his passion for the original material.
They say you don’t know what you got until is gone. But in this case it seems like you don’t know what kind of end of the world movie you have until you see another one. Of course The Road is not on the same league as 2012 and that’s because the film adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) is a lot more subtle, artful and a lot more horrifying.
Watching Viggo Mortensen and his son try to survive makes 2012 look like a feel good movie. And I actually mean that as a compliment to both movies.
Here is a look at one of the many tense moments that the protagonists endure.
For now all I will say is that the movie has a lot that deserves praise and admiration but I don’t see it as a strong contender for the Best Picture race.
Another week, another random anniversary. 27 years ago this week movie goers were being creeped out by Creepshow, a horror anthology featuring shorts by the likes of Stephen King and George Romero.
I was never allowed to see this movie in the theaters-my parents sometimes drew the line- but I watched several times on cable. What is your favorite segment? Did you even remember that Leslie Nielsen was in the movie?
Heres a look at the creepy-for all the retro cheese-trailer.
Before the world ends 2012, Sony’s new film that opens tomorrow in Puerto Rico and the US, is going to make a lot of money. According to the L.A Times, the film has already racked up about $7.2 million from early openings in Belgium, France, Poland and Thailand. The French opening was the second biggest first day ever for a non-sequel. In Thailand, it had the biggest opening day of any film this year. While you wait to see if the predictions come true, the ones pertaining to the tickets sales not the end of Mayan Calendar, check out my TV interviews, which air Thursday night on Anda Pal Cara, Univision Puerto Rico, with director Roland Emmerich and actor Chiwetel Ejiofor ( Love Actually, Serenity, American Gangster)
Este es el link de la Entrevista a John Cusack, realizada durante la rueda de prensa de 2012, que se publicó hoy en El Nuevo Día y en www.endi.com.
Mañana, junto con el estreno del filme, se publicará la reseña.
The last time I talked to Matt Damon( two months ago at the Toronto FilmFestival) I asked him if he was interested in following his friend Ben Affleck’s steps into the director’s chair. He assured me “that will inevitable, but for now I’m grateful to have my plate full as an actor and getting to collaborate with the best directors out there.”
He wasn’t kidding. He’s got the upcoming Invictus with Clint Eastwood. A reteaming with Paul Greengrass (Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum) which you can take a look at here
After this he has a Liberace project set up with Steven Soderberg and today Variety announced that he would be working with Eastwood again in Hereafter a supernatural drama that will film in Paris, London, Hawaii and San Francisco and is slated for release in December 2010.
Before all this comes to fruition, lets hope Damon has to pencil in a trip to the Kodak Theater. He is still a front runner in the Best Actor category for his hilariously scary performance in The Informant!
Before the economic crisis-my tuesday chant use to be-DVDTUESDAY! (I’m a geek, I know no need to remind me) But this week out all the new titles the MUST HAVE of the week is UP, the slightly adult Pixar gem that hopefully will land one of the coveted 10 spots in the running for the Best Picture Oscar. I mean really, how could it not?
If your looking for something more fun, but slightly less substantial The Ugly Truth. And lo and behold, this past summer filmotico got himself on a plane and went and talked with the stars of this film.
The interviews aired on APC, Univision PR when the movie opened.
Things to look out for- MY FACE when I ask Heigl about faking an orgasm (So not confortable) and Mr. Butler’s face when I asked him about his salsa moves. Check it out!
